At best, the cover letter could help any job seeker either stand out from the rest, or it can make even the most promising candidate seem boring and not worth hiring. Sadly, the majority of people’s cover letters essentially are the same. They go on and on about their experience and repeat why they are worth hiring which unfortunately doesn’t really catch employers’ attention.
Best Cover Letter Tips
The Internet is filled with tips and tutorials about writing your personal cover letter, but very little actually give useful information aside from the obvious tips like using ‘good grammar’. Here are a couple tips you could follow that will definitely make the entire process much easier.
1) Do Not Repeat Your Resume
Most people write their cover letters as if it were a life novel of their expeience. Frankly, your letter will likely be stapled or attached to the exact same email as your resume. What you can do is assume that they’ll glance at it, but that’s most likely it. Instead, try using your cover letter to bring out your personality, and display your interest in getting the job. Try to be as personable as you can and do your best not to make your resume look like you did it without much thought.
2) Keep it short
People have very short attention spans, so keep it short and simple. Three paragraphs or less is what you should aim for, as quality content is so much better than quantity.
3) Address Nobody
Sometimes, you really have no idea who you’re going to address your letter to. If you aren’t quite sure who you’re going to address it to, then do not address it to anybody. Instead, just jump it right to the body of your letter. This will make it quick for them to learn about you right away and get to know about what you can do for them.
4) Stop Saying You’re A Hard worker
It is very common for job applicants to say they are a hardworking person who strives to give their best, and while that is good to say, you really need to understand the fact that saying you are a hard worker doesn’t much of a difference because everybody says it. Instead, you could talk about how through your experiences you know you would be a great asset to the company.
When you know how to make the right cover letter, you will without a doubt be the frontrunner of the job you wish to land.
